Cracking the Code: The Zodiac Killer’s 50-Year-Old Cipher Finally Solved
"The Z340 code, sent by the notorious and never-captured Zodiac Killer to The San Francisco Chronicle in 1969, has finally been solved through the dedicated work of three experts."
The Zodiac Killer was a serial killer who operated in the United States during the late 1960s and early 1970s. His true identity remains unknown, making him one of the most famous and mysterious criminals in history. To understand this case better, I recommend watching the 2007 film Zodiac, directed by David Fincher.
While David Fincher’s 2007 film Zodiac provides a great overview of the case, there is a much deeper layer to this story. The most defining characteristic of the Zodiac Killer was the series of complex ciphers he sent following his murders. While some were solved early on, the most significant one, the Z340 cipher, remained unbroken for decades. This unsolved puzzle stood as the biggest barrier to understanding the killer’s true identity and motivations.
The Making of a Superstar Killer
Another factor in his fame was the role of the media during that era. The press turned the Zodiac into a national superstar, a move that not only amplified his notoriety but also encouraged potential copycats. The fact that his identity is still a mystery and the murders remain officially unsolved has transformed the Zodiac into a legend filled with secrets. This combination of factors has kept researchers and enthusiasts busy for years. Despite various theories and suspects, every lead has remained speculative without definitive evidence. Some believe he was a lone, highly intelligent individual, while others theorize the crimes were committed by multiple people.

The Enigma of the Z340 Letter
Amidst this mystery, the killer left behind his infamous letters. The most legendary among them is the Z340. This complex block of symbols was sent to the San Francisco Chronicle on November 8, 1969. It proved to be staggeringly difficult to crack. In fact, it was so complex that it took 51 years for anyone to finally solve it.
American software developer David Oranchak, Australian mathematician Sam Blake, and Belgian cryptographer Jarl Van Eycke set out to reveal the secret behind the code. They initially assumed the cipher followed well-understood systems like homophonic substitution, transposition, or polyalphabetic substitution. However, after numerous failed attempts, they realized they were getting nowhere.

A Masterclass in Deception
The killer had not simply placed the code into a standard rectangular grid. The message was designed to be read from left to right and diagonally, shifting based on whether it was viewed on a horizontal or vertical axis. Furthermore, the message was split into four sections of unequal length. A decryption algorithm or key that worked on one section would fail on the next. This series of bewildering tactics demonstrated the high level of intelligence behind the killer's methods.
To break it, the team used a program called AZdecrypt. They tested every possible variation, including row-major, column-major, alternating row-column, spirals, and diagonals. It was a feat of advanced mathematics and computational power that finally brought the Zodiac's silent 51-year-old message into the light.
I hope you are having lots of fun in trying to catch me!! That wasn’t me on the TV show, which brings up a point about me. I am not afraid of the gas chamber because it will send me to paradise all the sooner. I now have enough slaves to work for me, whereas everyone else has nothing when they reach paradise, which is why they are afraid of death. I am not afraid because I know that my new life will be an easy one in paradise death. Of course, the identity of the killer remains unknown to this day.
